About the Play:
George and Helen have just sent their last child off to college and are looking forward to the empty nester experience; the chance to focus on themselves and their relationship. And to have the house all to themselves. But the bliss doesn’t last long, as the kids come rushing home after experiencing their first hard knocks in the real world. As days turn into weeks, George and Helen lament the parenting “mistakes” they may have made and plot to push their self-centered kids back on the course of adulthood. The play is set in the late 70’s in suburban Los Angeles.
About the Characters: Casting Seven (7) Characters GEORGE BUTLER Age: 50 Gender: Male presenting Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Heavy Characteristics: A typical father from the 50’s-60’s, with a bit of a weak spot for his misfit kids. A would-be passionate lover for his wife – should they ever find themselves alone in their own house. Part will call for emotional and physical intimacy with Helene – including kissing and snuggling on a furry rug – until Michael walks in on them.
HELENE BUTLER Age: 50 Gender: Female presenting Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Heavy Characteristics: Played the typical housewife/mother through the 50’s-60’s, while raising 3 kids: All while suppressing her artistic side. Now that the kids are grown, Helene wants to (a) rekindle her romance with her husband, and (b) plunge into her passion for painting. Kids returning home does not fit either plan. More ready than George to give them the heave-ho. Part will call for emotional and physical intimacy with George – including kissing and snuggling on a furry rug – until Michael walks in on them.
MICHAEL BUTLER Age: 30 Gender: Male presenting Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Moderate Characteristics: The “sciency” son with a Ph.D. in Math from MIT. A bit scatterbrained, socially inept, and pretty clueless about social norms and other people’s feelings. Packs up and rushes home in the middle of an early “mid-life” crisis when he can’t solve an unsolvable math problem and is sure his career is over. Decides to pursue a Ph.D. in the physical sciences and proceeds to nearly blow up the house with his wayward experiments.
ELLIOT BUTLER Age: Mid-late 20’s Gender: Male presenting Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Moderate Characteristics: A smooth-talking salesman, kicked out of his Texas home by his wife after he was caught stepping out. This is part of a life-long pattern of philandering. Elliott is mildly remorseful but more frustrated with his wife because she would not accept his apology and let him back in the house. In his world, apologies have to be accepted; even if they aren’t sincere and no one believes that the behavior will change.
K. BUTLER Age: 18-20 Gender: Any Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Light Characteristics: This is the youngest Butler child – headed off to University. K. is more mature than the other Butler children – which isn’t saying much. K. is athletic.
JANIE JOHNSON Age: 20’s Gender: Female presenting Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Moderate Characteristics: A free-spirited young woman who meets K. in San Francisco on the drive to school. When K. finds out she is homeless, K. “kindly” offers her a bedroom in his parents’ house, where she appears unannounced. Although she might come off as flighty, she is, in fact, the most mature and considerate character in the play.
Cast Requirements:
2 women / 4 men
Plot Synopsis:
Remember those wonderful Broadway comedies of the fifties and sixties? This play by the author of Under the Yum Yum Tree is firmly in that tradition. Alone Together delighted audiences on Broadway with Janis Paige and Kevin McCarthy playing a middle-aged couple whose children have finally left the nest. They are alone together, but not for long. All three sons come charging back home after experiencing some hard knocks in the real world, and Mom and Dad have quite a time pushing them out again.
