| When the mother of good-natured Elwood P. Dowd passes away, his sister Veta Louise and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, move back to Denver to live with him at the Dowd estate. To their surprise and dismay, they discover that Elwood has a new friend, Harvey, an invisible six-and-a-half-foot rabbit. When Elwood introduces his invisible friend to guests at a society party that Veta is hosting, Veta and Myrtle have had enough. They attempt to have him committed to a sanitarium. Veta takes Elwood to Chumley's Rest, run by the noted psychiatrist Dr. William R. Chumley. Complications ensue when Veta tries to explain to Chumley's assistant, Dr. Sanderson, why she is committing Elwood. Elwood's unflappable nature and his polite attitude toward one and all seem to protect him, and before long others begin to think they see Harvey as well. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
